What TMS is
A drug-free depression treatment, available in Minnesota since 2008
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared, non-drug treatment for depression that has been offered in Minnesota since shortly after its 2008 clearance. It uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the region of the brain that regulates mood and that is measurably underactive in many people with treatment-resistant depression. A standard course runs five days a week for six weeks, each session lasting between three and thirty-seven minutes depending on the protocol. There is no anesthesia, no sedation and no recovery time — most patients drive themselves to and from appointments and go straight back to work.
This site exists because finding a TMS provider in Minnesota is harder than it should be. Clinics cluster in the Twin Cities metro, Rochester, Duluth and St. Cloud and thin out fast across greater Minnesota, insurance requirements differ between Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, HealthPartners, Medica, UCare and Medicare, and clinic websites rarely publish the details that actually matter: which coil they use, whether they offer accelerated protocols, and how long the wait is.

Every major commercial insurer and Medicare all cover TMS for depression once prior-treatment criteria are met.
Six weeks, five days a week
A standard course is 36 sessions. Accelerated theta burst protocols compress that dramatically at clinics that offer them.

Insurance
What Minnesota insurers require before they approve TMS
Every major insurer operating in Minnesota covers TMS for major depressive disorder, but all of them require documented failure of prior treatment first. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, HealthPartners, Medica, UCare and PreferredOne generally expect trials of multiple antidepressants from more than one class plus a course of psychotherapy. Aetna, Cigna and UnitedHealthcare typically require two to four failed medication trials. Medicare covers TMS in Minnesota under the local coverage determination administered by National Government Services, the Medicare contractor for Jurisdiction 6, which requires trials of four medications or documented intolerance. Coverage under Medical Assistance, Minnesota's Medicaid program, exists through the state's managed care plans but prior authorization is strict. Most Minnesota clinics handle the authorization paperwork for you — ask before your consultation.
